DVD menus, dinner and Skype conversations, Christmas music, computer operating systems; there have been times in the last months when I’ve had the distinct feeling that I hear and read more Danish than German because, through a string of coincidences, I have had the pleasure of befriending a little gang of Danes in Berlin.

This language humbles me. There are some Danish words that a German speaker can recognize, but its sounds and melodies are something else. When I test-drive a Danish sentence, it makes German feel familiar and natural in comparison.

My favorite Dane has been keeping me in a northern holiday spirit with Christmas music, advent candles, Christmas markets, and homemade æbleskiver (think circular popovers filled with apple slices) served with gløgg, the Danish version of mulled wine.
