We stayed at an (awesome) Airbnb sublet in Oakland these last couple of nights—that’s the building and our wheels—until packing it up on New Year’s Day to continue south through Big Sur. We kept with the beach picnic tradition and had a lunch of mackerel and salad on a cliff that smelled like a combination of lavender, juniper, and salt air, which I am really into. (The totable cooler worked like a charm, L & KT!)

At sunset, a massive wall of fog started to roll in over the water—this was something I’d never seen before; it was wild. It engulfed us until the road elevated us above it. Anthony snapped the last pic—which I think expresses the novelty for all of us in that we had the sensation of seeing what you would normally see from an airplane window, but this time you could get out in it.
